AI for law firms
AI for law firms: faster intake, first drafts and billing, with attorneys in control
AI helps a law firm by handling the intake calls, conflict checks, document assembly, deadline tracking, time capture and billing work that eats attorney and staff hours. Ironbridge builds AI agents and automations that connect to your practice management system, keep client confidences protected, and leave every legal judgment and client-facing opinion to a lawyer.
Where the work piles up in law firms
Intake calls that go nowhere
Prospective clients call after hours, leave vague voicemails, or call three firms at once. By the time someone calls back, the best cases have often signed elsewhere, and staff still have to screen the ones that are not a fit.
Conflicts and engagement paperwork
Every new matter needs a conflict search across clients, adverse parties and related entities, then an engagement letter with the right scope and fee terms. Doing this by hand is slow and easy to get wrong when names are spelled differently.
Drafting from scratch or from the last similar file
Associates and paralegals rebuild demand letters, discovery requests, motions and agreements by hunting for a similar old document. Clause choices and defined terms drift from one draft to the next.
Document review and medical record summaries
Litigation and personal injury matters bring thousands of pages of records, productions and deposition transcripts. Summarizing and indexing them is necessary work that rarely gets billed at full value.
Unbilled time and slow collections
Lawyers reconstruct time entries at the end of the week from memory, email and calendars. Vague entries get written down or rejected by clients and insurers, and invoices go out late.

Intake and new business
Answer every prospective client quickly and send only qualified matters to attorneys.
4 use cases
- Voice agent
24/7 intake voice and chat agent
A voice and web chat agent answers prospective clients at any hour, gathers the facts your practice areas need, such as incident date, injury type, employer or court, and books a consultation. It states clearly that it is not a lawyer and gives no legal advice. The attorney sees a clean intake summary before the call.
- Analytics
Case screening against firm criteria
The system scores each intake against the criteria your partners set: practice area, venue, statute of limitations window, liability facts and damages indicators. Matters that fit go to an attorney for review. Declines get a courteous non-engagement letter that the attorney approves.
- Automation
Lead follow-up and consult reminders
Prospects who have not booked or signed get timely follow-up by text and email, and booked consults get reminders with what documents to bring. The sequence stops the moment a person replies or the matter is declined.
- Analytics
Referral source tracking
Every new matter is tagged with its referral source, whether another attorney, a past client, a directory or an ad. Partners see which sources send signed, profitable matters and which send only calls, so marketing spend follows real results.
Conflicts, engagement and matter opening
Open matters cleanly and consistently, with the conflicts record to show for it.

- AI agent
AI-assisted conflict search
The system searches your client and matter database for the new client, adverse parties, related companies, officers and aliases, including fuzzy name matches that exact searches miss. It produces a conflicts report with each possible hit explained. An attorney clears or escalates every hit.
- Automation
Engagement letter assembly
From the intake record, the system drafts the engagement letter with the correct scope, fee arrangement, retainer terms and practice-specific disclosures from your approved templates. The responsible attorney reviews and sends it for e-signature, and the signed copy files to the matter.
- Automation
Matter opening and client onboarding
Once the engagement is signed and the retainer lands in trust, the system opens the matter in your practice management tool, creates folders, sets the team, and sends the client a welcome packet with portal access and a document checklist.
Drafting and legal research support
Get to a solid first draft faster, from your own templates and prior work.
4 use cases
- AI agent
First drafts from firm templates
The agent assembles demand letters, discovery requests, standard motions, NDAs and operating agreements from your approved forms and the matter facts. It flags where facts are missing instead of inventing them. An attorney edits and signs every draft.
- AI agent
Contract review against your playbook
For transactional work, the system compares an incoming contract to your clause playbook and marks deviations in indemnity, limitation of liability, termination, assignment and governing law. It suggests fallback language from your playbook for the attorney to accept or change.
- AI agent
Research memo starter with citation checks
The system pulls relevant authorities from your research platform and prior firm memos to outline a research memo. Every citation links to its source and is checked for existence and treatment. The attorney confirms each authority before relying on it, because AI tools can cite cases that do not exist.
- Custom app
Firm knowledge assistant
Lawyers and staff ask questions of the firm's own brief bank, form library and practice notes and get answers with links to the source documents. Access follows your matter permissions and ethical walls, so nobody sees files they should not.
Litigation, discovery and case management
Turn large document sets into usable summaries and never miss a date.

Medical record and chronology summaries
For personal injury, workers' compensation and med mal matters, the system reads medical records and bills and builds a treatment chronology with providers, dates, diagnoses and charges, each linked to the source page. A paralegal verifies the chronology before it goes into a demand.
- AI agent
Deposition and transcript digests
Transcripts are summarized by topic and witness, with page and line citations for every point. Attorneys search across all depositions in a matter for admissions, inconsistencies and exhibits.
- AI agent
First-pass discovery triage
Before attorney review, the system sorts produced documents by issue, custodian and likely privilege, and flags hot documents. Attorneys make every responsiveness and privilege call, and the privilege log is built from their decisions.
- Automation
Deadline and docket calculation alerts
When a filing or served document arrives, the system reads it, proposes response deadlines under the applicable court rules, and adds them to the matter calendar pending a docketing clerk or attorney confirmation. Reminders go to the whole matter team as dates approach.
Client communication and service
Keep clients informed without lawyers spending the day on status calls.
3 use cases
- AI agent
Matter status updates
The system drafts plain-language status updates from recent matter activity, such as filings, hearings, offers and next steps. The responsible attorney or paralegal approves each update before it goes to the client.
- Custom app
Client document collection
Clients get a secure portal checklist of what the firm needs, such as tax returns, pay stubs, medical bills, corporate records or photos. Automated reminders follow up on missing items, and uploads are named and filed to the matter.
- AI agent
Inbound call and email routing
Calls and emails from existing clients, opposing counsel and courts are identified, tied to the right matter, and routed to the right person with a short summary. Anything time-sensitive, like a court notice, is flagged at the top of the queue.
Time, billing and firm operations
Capture more of the work you do and get paid for it sooner.
5 use cases
- AI agent
Passive time capture suggestions
The system reviews each lawyer's emails, documents and calendar and suggests time entries tied to the right matter with clear, billable narratives. Lawyers accept, edit or reject each entry. Nothing posts to a bill without their approval.
- Automation
Pre-bill review against billing guidelines
Before invoices go out, the system checks entries against each client's or insurer's outside counsel guidelines: block billing, vague descriptions, task code requirements, rate caps and staffing rules. The billing partner sees flagged entries instead of reading every line.
- Automation
Collections follow-up
Overdue invoices get polite reminders with a payment link on your schedule, escalating to the responsible attorney when an account passes a set age. Disputes and payment plans are routed to a person, never handled by the AI.
- Analytics
Firm performance dashboard
Partners see realization, utilization, work in progress, A/R aging, matter profitability and intake conversion by practice area in one place, pulled from your practice management and accounting systems.
- Automation
Trust account reconciliation support
The system matches trust ledger activity to bank statements and client ledgers each month and flags differences for the bookkeeper and responsible attorney. It prepares the three-way reconciliation report, and a person signs off on it.

Guardrails for AI in law firms
Lawyers carry ethical duties that do not pause when software does part of the work. We design every system around the ABA Model Rules and your state's versions of them. This is general information, not legal advice.
Confidentiality under ABA Model Rule 1.6
Rule 1.6 requires reasonable efforts to prevent unauthorized disclosure of client information. We use AI vendors whose terms bar training on your data, keep matter data in your own tenant where possible, enforce ethical walls and matter permissions, and log access. Client information never goes into consumer chat tools.
Competence and supervision under Rules 1.1, 5.1 and 5.3
Lawyers must understand the benefits and risks of the technology they use and supervise nonlawyer assistance, which bar guidance increasingly reads to include AI tools. ABA Formal Opinion 512 addresses generative AI directly. Our systems show sources for every output, and an attorney reviews anything filed, sent to a client or relied on.
Candor to the tribunal and verified citations
Rule 3.3 and court rules require accurate statements of law, and courts have sanctioned lawyers for filing AI-generated fake citations. Our research tools link every citation to its source and flag anything they cannot verify. Some courts also require disclosure of AI use, so we track which documents AI helped draft.
Unauthorized practice and client communication
Intake agents must not give legal advice or create an attorney-client relationship by accident. Our agents state they are not lawyers, collect facts only, and route legal questions to an attorney. Rules 7.1 to 7.3 on advertising and solicitation also apply to automated outreach, so marketing messages are reviewed before they run.
Fees and trust accounting under Rules 1.5 and 1.15
Fees must be reasonable, and ABA guidance says lawyers should not bill clients for time saved by AI as if the work were done by hand. Client funds in trust must be safeguarded and reconciled. Our billing tools suggest entries only, and trust reports are prepared for a person to review and sign.

One flat monthly fee, month to month. How the engagement works
AI for law firms: questions we get asked
How can AI help a small law firm?
AI helps a small firm most with intake, conflict checks, first drafts from firm templates, record summaries, deadline tracking, time capture and billing review. It does the preparation and the chasing. Lawyers keep every legal judgment and approve anything that goes to a client or a court.
How much does AI cost for a law firm?
Ironbridge works for one flat monthly fee, month to month, scoped on a strategy call around your practice areas and the workflows you want to fix first. The fee covers finding the right work, building the agents and automations, and keeping them running.
Is it ethical for lawyers to use AI?
Yes, when it is used with care. ABA Formal Opinion 512 and many state bars say lawyers may use generative AI if they protect confidentiality, understand the tool, verify its output, supervise its use and bill fairly. We build systems that make those duties easier to meet and to document.
Will AI replace paralegals or associates?
No. AI shortens the first pass on drafting, summarizing and review, but the work still needs trained people to check facts, apply judgment and deal with clients and courts. Most firms use it to take on more matters with the team they have.
What should a law firm automate first?
Start with intake and follow-up, because missed calls cost signed cases, and with time capture, because unbilled work is revenue already earned. Conflict searches and engagement letters are a close third since they touch every new matter.
Can AI work with Clio, MyCase or Filevine?
Yes. These platforms have APIs that let an AI system read matter data, create tasks and calendar entries, and post draft time entries for approval. We connect to your existing tools so staff do not have to learn a new system.
Can an AI intake agent answer calls for a personal injury firm?
Yes. An intake agent can answer every call, gather incident facts, check the statute of limitations window against your criteria, and book the consultation. It makes clear it is not an attorney and routes anyone who needs advice or is in crisis to a person.
