AI for retail and e-commerce
AI for retail and e-commerce: agents that handle orders, support, catalog and inventory work
AI helps a retail or e-commerce business by answering order and return questions, writing and cleaning product content, watching inventory and margins, and pulling store data into one daily view. Ironbridge builds and runs those systems on your Shopify, marketplace, POS and 3PL stack, and your team approves pricing, refunds and anything a customer sees.
Where the work piles up in retail and e-commerce
Where is my order tickets
Most support volume is the same handful of questions: where is my package, can I change my address, how do I return this. Agents copy tracking numbers from Shopify and the carrier site by hand, all day, while the harder tickets wait.
Product content that never gets finished
Every new SKU needs a title, description, bullets, alt text, size chart and marketplace variants. Supplier spreadsheets arrive messy, and the backlog of thin or missing listings keeps growing, which hurts search and conversion.
Inventory spread across too many places
Stock lives in the ecommerce platform, the POS, a 3PL portal, Amazon and a purchasing spreadsheet. Nobody has one number they trust, so the team oversells a hot item and sits on dead stock in the back room.
Returns, chargebacks and fraud reviews
Each return needs a reason, a condition check, a refund or exchange and a restock decision. Chargebacks need evidence gathered from orders, tracking and emails before a deadline. It is slow, detailed work that nobody enjoys.
Reports stitched together on Monday morning
Owners want sales, margin, ad spend and stock in one place. Someone exports from Shopify, Meta, Google, Amazon and the POS, then pastes it into a spreadsheet. By the time it is done, the week is half over.

Customer service and support
Take the repetitive tickets off your team so people handle the ones that need judgment.
5 use cases
- AI agent
Order status and tracking agent
An agent answers where is my order questions in chat, email and help desk tickets by looking up the order in Shopify or BigCommerce and the live carrier tracking. It explains delays in plain words and escalates lost or damaged packages to a person with the order history attached.
- AI agent
Returns and exchange assistant
The assistant checks the order date, item and your return policy, then starts the return in Loop, Returnly or your own flow and sends the label. Exceptions such as final sale items, late returns or high-value orders go to a supervisor to approve before anything is refunded.
- Automation
Help desk triage and draft replies
Every new Gorgias, Zendesk or Gladly ticket is tagged by topic, urgency and order value, then given a draft reply built from the order record and your macros. Agents review, edit and send, so the first response goes out faster without losing your brand voice.
- AI agent
Product question answering on the site
A chat agent answers fit, material, compatibility and care questions using your product data, size charts and past support answers. When it is not sure, it says so and hands off to a person, and every unanswered question is logged so the listing can be fixed.
- Voice agent
Store phone line that answers after hours
A voice agent picks up calls for store hours, order status, pickup readiness and return policy, and takes a message for anything else. Calls about complaints or large orders are routed to a manager with a written summary instead of a voicemail.
Catalog and product content
Get every SKU listed, accurate and consistent across every channel.
5 use cases
- Automation
Product description and attribute writer
The system reads supplier sheets, spec PDFs and photos, then drafts titles, descriptions, bullet points and attributes in your house style. A merchandiser reviews each batch before it publishes, and claims such as materials, certifications or health benefits are flagged for a closer check.
- Automation
Supplier data cleanup and mapping
Messy vendor files are normalized into your catalog format: sizes, colors, units, UPCs and category mapped the same way every time. Missing fields and conflicting values are listed for a person to resolve instead of silently loaded into the store.
- Automation
Marketplace listing sync
Approved product content is reshaped for Amazon, Walmart Marketplace, eBay and Google Merchant Center, each with its own title rules and required attributes. Feed errors and suppressed listings are pulled back daily with a plain explanation of what to fix.
- Automation
Image alt text and SEO metadata
Alt text, meta titles and meta descriptions are generated for product and collection pages from your catalog data. The team spot-checks a sample, then the rest publishes, closing an accessibility and search gap most stores leave open.
- Analytics
Review and Q&A summarizer
Customer reviews from Yotpo, Okendo or Judge.me are grouped into themes such as runs small, color differs from photo or breaks after a month. Merchandising and product teams get a weekly summary per SKU, and serious safety complaints are flagged to a person the same day.
Inventory, purchasing and fulfillment
Know what you have, what to reorder and what is stuck, across every location.
5 use cases
- Analytics
Reorder recommendations
The system reads sales velocity, stock on hand, open purchase orders and supplier lead times, then suggests what to reorder and how much. A buyer approves or edits every suggested PO before it goes to the vendor, so the system never commits your cash on its own.
- Automation
Multi-location stock reconciliation
Counts from the POS, the ecommerce platform, the 3PL and marketplaces are compared every night. Mismatches over a threshold are listed with the likely cause, such as an unsynced transfer or a missed receipt, so the ops lead fixes the right record.
- Analytics
Slow-moving and dead stock alerts
Items with weeks of cover far above target, or with no sales in a set period, are flagged with options such as a bundle, markdown or transfer to another store. The merchant decides the action; the system just makes sure nothing is forgotten in the back room.
- AI agent
3PL and carrier exception handling
An agent watches ShipBob, ShipStation or your 3PL for orders stuck in picking, address errors and carrier exceptions. It fixes the simple ones within rules you set, emails the customer when needed, and queues the rest for a person with the full context.
- Automation
Purchase order and receiving match
Vendor confirmations, advance ship notices and receiving counts are matched against the original PO. Short shipments, substitutions and price changes are flagged before the vendor invoice is paid, so the buyer can claim credits while the details are fresh.
Marketing and customer retention
Turn the data you already collect into better campaigns, without handing the brand to a robot.
4 use cases
- Automation
Email and SMS campaign drafting
The system drafts Klaviyo or Attentive campaigns and flows from your product launches, promotions and brand guidelines, including subject line options and segment suggestions. A marketer approves every send, and SMS drafts are checked against your consent and quiet-hour rules.
- Analytics
Customer segmentation and win-back lists
Order history is scored for recency, frequency and value to build segments such as lapsing VIPs, one-time buyers and discount-only shoppers. Marketing gets ready-to-use lists with a suggested message angle for each, and decides what goes out.
- Analytics
Ad performance digest
Spend and results from Meta, Google Ads and TikTok are pulled together with Shopify revenue to show which campaigns and products actually produce margin. The weekly digest calls out ads to pause or scale, and the marketer makes the call.
- AI agent
Wholesale and B2B order intake
Wholesale orders that arrive by email, PDF or spreadsheet are read, matched to your price list and entered as draft orders in Shopify B2B or your ERP. A person confirms pricing, terms and credit limits before the order is released.
Finance, fraud and back office
Close the books faster and fight the chargebacks worth fighting.
4 use cases
- Automation
Chargeback evidence packets
When a dispute lands in Shopify Payments, Stripe or PayPal, the system gathers the order, IP and address match, tracking, delivery confirmation and customer emails into a response draft. A person decides whether to fight or accept, and submits it before the deadline.
- AI agent
Order fraud review queue
Orders flagged by your fraud tool are enriched with past order history, address mismatches and email age, then sorted into approve, hold or cancel recommendations. A team member makes the final call, and the reasons are logged for later review.
- Automation
Payout and sales reconciliation
Payouts from Shopify, Amazon, PayPal and your card processor are matched against orders, fees, refunds and reserves, then posted to QuickBooks or Xero as summary entries. Unmatched items go to the bookkeeper instead of hiding in a clearing account.
- Automation
Vendor invoice processing
Supplier invoices arriving by email are read, coded to the right accounts and matched to purchase orders and receipts. Invoices that match within tolerance are queued for approval in Bill.com or your AP tool; anything else waits for a person.
Stores and staff
Help store teams spend more time on the floor and less on the back office.
4 use cases
- Custom app
Store associate knowledge assistant
Associates ask a simple chat tool about return policy, product specs, promotion rules or how to process an exchange in the POS. Answers come from your own policy documents and training materials, with the source shown, so new hires get up to speed without calling the manager.
- Analytics
Daily store performance briefing
Each store manager gets a short morning note with yesterday's sales against plan, conversion from door counters, top and bottom sellers, and low stock on key items. District managers get the roll-up with the stores that need attention first.
- Analytics
Schedule and labor planning support
Sales history, foot traffic and planned promotions are used to suggest staffing levels by hour for each store. Managers adjust and publish the schedule in their own tool, and the system flags shifts that would push someone into overtime.
- Custom app
Owner dashboard across channels
A custom dashboard shows revenue, gross margin, inventory value, ad spend and return rate across the website, marketplaces and stores in one place. Owners can ask plain questions such as which category lost margin last month and get an answer with the numbers behind it.

Guardrails for AI in retail and e-commerce
Retail AI touches card data, customer contact rules and advertising claims. These are the rules we build around from day one.
PCI DSS and payment data
PCI DSS sets strict rules for how cardholder data is stored, processed and transmitted. Our systems never read or store full card numbers: they work from order records and payment processor references, and card handling stays inside Shopify Payments, Stripe or your certified processor.
TCPA and SMS marketing consent
The TCPA and carrier rules require prior express written consent for marketing texts and limit when you can send them. Any AI-drafted SMS goes only to subscribers with recorded consent in your SMS platform, respects quiet hours and opt-outs, and is approved by a person before it is scheduled.
FTC rules on reviews and product claims
The FTC prohibits fake or misleading reviews and requires that product claims be truthful and supported. AI never writes customer reviews, and any generated copy that makes health, safety, environmental or made-in-USA claims is flagged for a person to verify before it goes live.
Customer privacy and state privacy laws
State laws such as the CCPA give shoppers rights over their personal data, including access and deletion. Customer data stays in your own systems and approved AI providers under agreements that bar training on it, and deletion requests are honored across every tool the system touches.

One flat monthly fee, month to month. How the engagement works
AI for retail and e-commerce: questions we get asked
How much does AI cost for a retail or e-commerce business?
Ironbridge works for one flat monthly fee, month to month, scoped on a strategy call around the work you want handled. That fee covers finding the right use cases, building the agents and automations, and keeping them running as your store and tools change.
Will AI replace my customer service team?
No. AI takes over the repetitive tickets such as order status, simple returns and policy questions, so your team spends its time on upset customers, complex exchanges and VIP orders. People still approve refunds outside policy and handle anything sensitive.
What should an online store automate first?
Most stores start with where is my order tickets and help desk draft replies, because the volume is high and the answers already live in your order data. Product content cleanup and payout reconciliation are common next steps once support is under control.
Does AI work with Shopify and Amazon?
Yes. We build on the platforms you already use, including Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Amazon Seller Central, Walmart Marketplace and the common help desk, email and shipping tools. The goal is to connect what you have, not to make you replatform.
Can AI write our product descriptions without hurting our brand?
Yes, when it is set up with your style guide, sample listings and a review step. The system drafts in batches, a merchandiser approves or edits before publishing, and any claims about materials, safety or health are flagged for a closer check.
Can AI help with inventory forecasting for a small retailer?
Yes. Using your sales history, current stock, open POs and supplier lead times, the system suggests reorder quantities and flags slow movers. A buyer approves every purchase order, so the forecast informs the decision rather than making it.
Is AI useful for brick-and-mortar stores, not just online?
Yes. Store teams benefit from a policy and product assistant, a daily performance briefing, a phone agent for routine calls, and inventory reconciliation between the POS and the back room. Many retailers run both channels, and the same data feeds both.
