AI for manufacturing

AI for manufacturing: faster quotes, cleaner orders and less paperwork on the shop floor

AI helps a manufacturer by handling the office work around production: reading RFQs and drawings, entering customer POs into the ERP, chasing supplier confirmations, drafting quality paperwork, and answering order status questions. Estimators, planners, and quality managers stay in control of prices, schedules, and dispositions.

Where the work piles up in manufacturing

RFQs wait in the estimator's inbox

Every RFQ arrives with drawings, specs, quantities, and material callouts in a different format. Estimators read each print, work out routings and outside processing, and build the quote by hand. Quotes go out slowly, and some are never answered.

Orders get re-keyed into the ERP

Customer POs come in as PDFs, emails, and portal downloads. Someone types each line into the ERP and checks prices, revisions, and ship dates against the quote. Typos and wrong drawing revisions show up later as scrap or late shipments.

Customers keep asking where their order is

Sales and customer service spend hours looking up job status, walking the floor, and emailing back. The answer is usually in the ERP or with the supervisor, but no one has time to pull it together.

Quality paperwork falls behind

NCRs, corrective actions, first article reports, and certificates of conformance take hours to write and file. Quality managers chase signatures and records ahead of every customer or registrar audit.

Suppliers go quiet

Buyers send POs and then chase confirmations, ship dates, and material certs by email and phone. A late raw material delivery is often found only when the job is already due to start.

Quoting and sales

Answer more RFQs, faster, with pricing your estimators trust.

5 use cases

  • AI agent

    RFQ intake and drawing review

The system reads incoming RFQs and their drawings, then pulls out part numbers, revisions, material, finish, tolerances, quantities, and certification requirements. It flags tight tolerances, unusual specs, and missing information. Estimators start from a clean summary instead of a stack of PDFs.

  • Custom app

    Quote builder from past jobs

It finds similar parts your shop has made before in the ERP and job history, then pre-fills routing, cycle times, material, and outside processing. The estimator adjusts the assumptions and sets the price. Final pricing and margin always come from a person.

  • Automation

    Outside processing quote requests

For plating, heat treat, anodizing, and other outside services, it sends quote requests to your approved vendors with the right specs and quantities, then collects their replies. The estimator sees every vendor price in one place before finishing the quote.

  • AI agent

    Quote follow-up agent

After a quote goes out, it follows up with the buyer on your schedule, answers simple questions like lead time or quote validity, and logs any reason given for a loss. Buyers who ask about price or scope get routed to the sales rep.

  • Analytics

    Win and loss analysis

It reviews quote history in the ERP or CRM and shows which part families, customers, materials, and order sizes you win and lose. Owners see where pricing may be off and which work fits the shop best.

Order management and customer service

Get orders into the system right the first time and answer status questions fast.

4 use cases

  • Automation

    Customer PO entry

It reads customer purchase orders from email or portals and drafts the sales order in the ERP. It checks each line against the quote for price, quantity, drawing revision, and requested date, and flags any mismatch. A customer service rep reviews and releases the order.

  • Automation

    Order acknowledgment and promise dates

Once an order is entered, it drafts the acknowledgment with the confirmed ship date from the ERP and sends it after approval. When a promise date moves, it drafts a customer notice with the new date and reason for the rep to send.

  • AI agent

    Order status agent

Customers and sales reps can ask for the status of an order by email or chat. The agent looks up the job in the ERP, reports the current operation and expected ship date, and hands off to a person when a job is late or on hold.

  • AI agent

    Engineering change and revision tracking

When a customer sends a new drawing revision or change notice, it compares it with the prior revision and lists what changed. It then flags every open order, job, and quote that uses the old revision so engineering can decide how to handle them.

Production planning and the shop floor

Give planners and supervisors better information, not more screens.

4 use cases

  • Analytics

    Schedule conflict alerts

It watches the ERP schedule for jobs whose material has not arrived, whose tooling is not ready, or whose work center is overloaded. Planners get a daily list of problems to fix before they hit the floor. The planner decides every schedule change.

  • AI agent

    Work instruction drafting

From drawings, routings, and notes from experienced operators, it drafts step-by-step work instructions with photos and inspection points. Engineering and quality review and approve them before release, and the approved version is controlled in your document system.

  • Automation

    Shift handoff summaries

At the end of each shift, supervisors dictate or type quick notes. The system turns them into a clean handoff covering jobs in progress, machine issues, quality holds, and staffing gaps. It posts the handoff where the next shift reads it.

  • Custom app

    Shop floor question assistant

Operators can ask questions on a tablet, such as the torque spec for a part or the inspection frequency for an operation. Answers come only from your approved work instructions, specs, and procedures, with the source shown. If it is not in the documents, it says so and points to a supervisor.

Quality

Keep records complete and audit-ready without the late nights.

4 use cases

  • AI agent

    NCR drafting

When an inspector logs a nonconformance, the system drafts the NCR with part number, lot, quantity, the defect in plain words, and the related job and drawing. The quality manager decides the disposition, such as rework, scrap, or use as is, and any customer notice.

  • AI agent

    Corrective action support

For corrective actions, it gathers related NCRs, inspection data, and complaint history, then drafts a starting 5 Why or 8D for the team to work through. It tracks due dates and effectiveness checks until the action is closed.

  • Automation

    First article and certification packets

It assembles first article inspection reports, such as AS9102 forms, along with material certs, process certs, and certificates of conformance for each shipment. It checks that every required document is present before the packet goes to quality for sign-off.

  • Analytics

    Audit readiness check

Before an ISO 9001, AS9100, or customer audit, it checks your records for expired calibrations, overdue training, open corrective actions, and missing signatures. The quality manager gets a list of gaps to close.

Purchasing and supply chain

Keep material arriving on time and suppliers accountable.

4 use cases

  • AI agent

    Supplier PO confirmation chaser

After a PO is sent, the agent asks the supplier to confirm price and ship date, then follows up until they do. It updates the expected receipt date in the ERP and alerts the buyer when a confirmed date will make a job late.

  • Analytics

    MRP exception review

It reads MRP output and sorts exceptions by impact: shortages that stop jobs this week, late POs, and suggested buys with long lead times. Buyers work the list from the top instead of scrolling hundreds of messages.

  • Automation

Material cert and supplier document check

When material arrives, it reads the mill cert or certificate of conformance and checks the grade, spec, heat number, and required tests against the PO. Mismatches go to receiving inspection before the material reaches the floor.

  • Analytics

    Supplier scorecards

It builds scorecards for each supplier from receipts, on-time dates, rejections, and corrective actions in the ERP. Purchasing uses them in supplier reviews and when choosing where to place the next order.

Maintenance, finance and reporting

Keep machines running and give owners a clear view of the business.

4 use cases

  • Automation

    Maintenance request intake

Operators report machine problems by text, voice, or tablet in plain words. The system turns each report into a work order in your maintenance system with the machine, symptoms, and urgency. The maintenance lead assigns and prioritizes the work.

  • Analytics

    Job costing review

After jobs close, it compares actual labor, material, and outside processing against the quote. It flags jobs that ran over and shows patterns by part family or work center, so estimators can correct future quotes.

  • Automation

    Vendor invoice matching

It matches supplier invoices to POs and receipts in the ERP, flags price and quantity differences, and routes exceptions to the buyer. Matched invoices go to accounts payable for approval and payment.

  • Custom app

    Owner operations dashboard

A single dashboard pulls bookings, backlog, on-time delivery, quote hit rate, scrap, and cash from the ERP and accounting system. Owners and managers see the week at a glance without building spreadsheets.

Guardrails for AI in manufacturing

Manufacturers carry customer IP, export-controlled data, and quality obligations. AI systems are built so controlled data stays controlled and people sign off on prices, dispositions, and safety.

ITAR and EAR export controls

The International Traffic in Arms Regulations and Export Administration Regulations restrict who can access controlled technical data, including drawings. Controlled data must not be sent to AI services or staff that are not authorized. We keep controlled work in approved environments, or out of AI workflows entirely, and mark which workflows may touch it.

DFARS, NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC

Defense suppliers handling Controlled Unclassified Information must meet DFARS 252.204-7012 and the NIST SP 800-171 controls, with CMMC assessments phasing in. Any AI tool that touches CUI must sit inside your assessed boundary. We map data flows before building so a new tool does not create a compliance gap.

Quality system and record rules

ISO 9001, AS9100, and for medical devices FDA 21 CFR Part 820 and Part 11 require controlled documents, traceable records, and approved signatures. AI drafts NCRs, instructions, and packets, but approved people sign them in your document control system. Every draft keeps a record of its sources.

OSHA and machine safety

OSHA rules such as lockout/tagout and machine guarding stay with trained people. A shop floor assistant can point to your written procedures, but it never approves a safety step, clears a lockout, or overrides a supervisor. Safety questions outside the approved documents go to a person.

Customer IP and NDAs

Customer drawings and specs are usually covered by NDAs and supply agreements. We use AI services that do not train on your data, restrict access by role, and keep customer files separate. This helps you meet the confidentiality terms your customers expect.

How we start

  1. Find

We sit with your team, map how the business actually runs, and pick the few jobs worth handing to AI first.

  2. Build

Our engineers build the agents, automations and apps inside the tools your people already use, with people approving what matters.

  3. Run

We monitor, fix and improve everything we ship, and report every month on what each system saved or earned.

One flat monthly fee, month to month. How the engagement works

AI for manufacturing: questions we get asked

How can AI help a small manufacturer?

AI helps most with the office work around production: reading RFQs and drawings, drafting quotes from past jobs, entering customer POs, chasing supplier confirmations, drafting NCRs, and answering order status questions. Your estimators, planners, and quality team keep control of prices, schedules, and dispositions.

How much does AI cost for a manufacturing company?

Ironbridge works on one flat monthly fee, month to month. The scope, and so the fee, is set on a strategy call after we look at your ERP, your quoting process, and where your people lose the most time. We do not publish a price because every shop's systems and priorities differ.

Will AI replace my estimators or buyers?

No. AI removes the reading, re-keying, and chasing so estimators and buyers spend their time on judgment: pricing, supplier choices, and customer relationships. Most shops use the freed time to answer more RFQs and catch problems earlier, not to cut experienced people who are hard to replace.

What should a manufacturer automate first?

Start with the work that is high volume and easy to check. For many shops that is customer PO entry, RFQ intake, or supplier PO follow-up. Each has clear inputs and outputs in the ERP, so a person can verify the result quickly and you see value in weeks.

Can AI read engineering drawings for quoting?

AI can read many drawings and pull out title block data, materials, finishes, notes, and callouts, and it can flag tight tolerances or unusual requirements. It does not replace an estimator's judgment on manufacturability or price. We treat its output as a starting summary that a person reviews.

Does AI work with our ERP?

Yes, in most cases. We connect to ERPs such as Epicor, Plex, Business Central, NetSuite, JobBOSS2, and E2 through their APIs, reports, and import tools. The ERP stays the system of record, and the AI reads from it and writes drafts back for your team to release.

Is AI safe for ITAR or defense work?

It can be, with the right setup. Controlled technical data and CUI must stay inside an authorized environment, so we either build inside that boundary or keep controlled work out of AI workflows entirely. We map your data flows first and document which workflows are allowed to touch what.
